Bears

Apparently our island is home to the largest concentration of coastal brown bear in the world.  At an estimated 1.4 per square mile they are a constant presence and often we will have brown bear walk through our yard.

It is a good idea to always be aware, make noise and possibly carry bear spray or noise makers when walking nature trails around the lodge.  Your guide carries a firearm when out on the days adventures, knows the habits of the local bears and will keep you out of trouble.

Keep in mind that the bears want nothing to do with humans and are focused on filling their bellies with grass, berries and fish.  A sow may become alarmed if she has cubs but being alert and staying out of areas where we might surprise a bear keeps this risk to a minimum.
